Where the numbers come from. The metric and imperial factors are the internationally defined ones — the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, the US survey foot exactly 1200/3937 m, the acre exactly 4046.8564224 m². The Indian units listed are those with a fixed statutory definition: a guntha is one fortieth of an acre, a cent one hundredth, a ground 2,400 ft², a kanal 605 yd² and a marla one twentieth of a kanal. Bigha, biswa and katha are deliberately absent — their size changes from state to state and often from district to district, so any single printed value would be wrong for most users.
