Bigha, biswa, katha and similar units differ from district to district, so this tool never assumes a value — enter the conversion used locally and it is applied to the computed area.
Method. Distances and azimuths are geodesic — Vincenty (1975) on the selected ellipsoid, the shortest path over the curved earth rather than a flat approximation. Area is the true area enclosed by geodesic sides, integrated over the ellipsoid through the authalic latitude. Both are checked against GeographicLib on every release: over a test set spanning 14 m to 6,700 km and three ellipsoids the distances agree to within 0.00002 m, azimuths to 2×10⁻⁹°, and areas to better than 1 part in 10 million. Grid area is the plane (shoelace) area of the same points projected to UTM — it is smaller or larger than the true ground area by roughly the square of the point scale factor, which is why both numbers are shown. Nothing is uploaded; the page keeps working with the network disconnected, apart from the map tiles.

What does the BTPL Distance & Area Calculator do?
The BTPL Distance & Area Calculator computes the geodesic distance and bearing between two points, and the perimeter and true area of a whole boundary, from either latitude/longitude or UTM grid coordinates. It is a free browser tool for surveyors, engineers and land professionals.
Which area units does it report?
The BTPL Distance & Area Calculator reports area in hectares, acres and guntha, plus a local unit you define yourself — bigha, biswa, katha or any other unit whose size varies from district to district — so that the tool never guesses such a unit for you. Grid area and ellipsoidal (ground) area are both reported.
Can I import a boundary file and export the result?
The BTPL Distance & Area Calculator imports boundary coordinates from CSV or Excel. The boundary can be exported as KML for Google Earth, and its corner points, with their labels, as DXF for CAD.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
Nothing is uploaded: the BTPL Distance & Area Calculator computes its results in your own browser, and your coordinates and files are never sent to BTPL or to any other server. The optional Show on map view is the one part that needs an internet connection: it downloads the map library and the map imagery for the area on screen from third-party map servers (Esri or OpenStreetMap), which can therefore see which area is displayed. Everything else keeps working without a connection once the page has loaded.
